What is an AI agent?
An AI agent is software that uses artificial intelligence to complete work end to end: it understands requests in natural language, decides what to do and carries out real actions in other systems, like quoting, booking an appointment or recording an order, without a person driving it step by step.
The word agent became a fashion label and today it gets stuck on anything that answers messages. The honest bar is a single question: does the software complete actions on its own, or does it only draft text so a human can do the work?
An assistant suggests; an agent does. That difference, which sounds like nuance, is what separates saving your team minutes from taking whole work off their hands.
The three pieces that make it an agent
First, understanding: it reads the customer's message as it arrives, typos, voice notes and photos included, and grasps what they need. Second, decision: with your business rules and context it picks the next step, for example asking for the size, building the quote or escalating to you. Third, execution: it performs the step in your systems for real, instead of describing it.
Without the third piece there is no agent: there is a draft generator. Useful, but a different category of tool and a different category of result.
What an AI agent does in sales
In a business that sells through messaging, the agent takes the conversation from the first hello: it identifies what the person wants, checks your catalog with prices and stock, quotes, answers questions, books the appointment or takes the order, and leaves everything recorded with its customer and stage. When a case leaves its lane, it hands it to you with full context.
With a caveat almost nobody offers: each of those actions exists only if the agent is connected to whatever performs it. With no catalog loaded it does not quote; with no calendar connected it does not book; with no CRM it does not record. So when you evaluate an agent the question is not what it can do in the abstract, but what it has connected in your case, which channels and languages it runs in, and how it hands off to a human when it should.
The result that matters is not that it writes nicely: it is that the sale moves forward without your team glued to the phone, and nothing is lost to a late reply.
And the AI already showing up inside WhatsApp?
Three things need separating. Meta AI, the blue circle inside WhatsApp, is Meta's assistant for the app's user: it answers the person's general questions and does not serve your business. Different is the Meta Business Agent, which Meta announced in June 2026: a business agent that can answer questions about your company, recommend products from your catalog, book appointments, qualify interested buyers, hand the conversation to your team and support the sale on WhatsApp and Messenger, where it is available and you are eligible.
The third is your own agent, third-party or custom-built, connected to your number through the WhatsApp Business Platform: it knows your catalog, your prices and your rules, and works with your systems. Today both serious routes coexist: Meta's agent where it applies, or an agent like Eva on the Platform when you want control over the rules, the integrations and the record of every sale. What is no longer true is that only one route exists.
