What is WhatsApp Business verification?
Three different things share that name: business portfolio verification with Meta, free, which proves your company legally exists; Meta Verified, the paid subscription with a badge for eligible WhatsApp Business app numbers; and Official Business Account status, which Meta grants to eligible phone numbers on the Platform.
Almost all the confusion around the check mark comes from mixing those three. One is a background process Meta uses to confirm your company is real; another is a visible subscription that includes the badge; the third is a status Meta grants to certain Platform numbers, also with a badge.
Here is what each one is, what it actually unlocks and how to arrive prepared at the application.
Business portfolio verification: the background one
It is done once in your Meta business portfolio and proves your business exists as a legal entity: registered name, address and contact details matching official documents. It costs nothing and paints no visible badge; it is one of the prerequisites asked for an Official Business Account, not the badge itself.
Worth stating precisely, because it circulates wrong: it is not a universal gate to start operating on the Platform. Where it weighs is when you grow. Your business-initiated sends are subject to messaging limits counted in distinct recipients per 24 hours, and those tiers rise as Meta's conditions are met, portfolio verification and sustained message quality among them. Without it, the ceiling arrives early.
Meta Verified and the Official Business Account: two ways to a blue badge
Meta Verified for business is a paid subscription that adds the badge, impersonation protection and support. On WhatsApp it applies to eligible numbers on the WhatsApp Business app, not to Platform numbers, and its availability depends on your market and on meeting the eligibility requirements.
The Official Business Account is a different thing: a status Meta grants to eligible numbers operated on the Platform, with its own requirements, and it also shows as a blue badge. Hence a precision almost nobody offers: not every blue badge is a paid subscription; there are two distinct routes to it, and neither replaces portfolio verification nor by itself speeds up an approval.
On WhatsApp the badge is blue now; the old green check is gone, unified with the rest of Meta's apps.
How to arrive prepared at the application
The practical advice that serves all three: align name, address and details everywhere before submitting. The legal name spelled the same in your paperwork, your site, your social profiles and your business portfolio; address and phone matching; your site naming the company exactly as registered. Reviews compare what you declare against what they can confirm, and inconsistencies are avoidable friction.
With Eva this process is part of the onboarding service: we prepare the application with your documents, submit it and work through whatever Meta asks to correct until the path is exhausted. The decision, in all three cases, belongs to Meta: we do not guarantee it, we work it.
