What is conversational commerce?

Conversational commerce is selling inside a messaging conversation: the customer asks, chooses, pays and gets follow-up in the same WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger chat, instead of navigating an online store alone. The conversation is the store.

In Mexico the digital sale that works rarely looks like a cart: it looks like a conversation. The person sees the product in an ad or a story, writes to ask the price, and everything else, the advice, the quote, the payment, the tracking number, happens in the chat.

Conversational commerce names that and takes it seriously as a channel: with tools, with process and with somebody who always answers. It is not a software fashion; it is the formalization of how people already buy.

The pieces of the full circuit

Entry: ads that open a chat, a WhatsApp link or QR on your social profiles and packaging, or the message button on your site. Conversation: somebody who answers on the spot, understands what the person wants and quotes real prices. Close: payment inside the thread, which can happen three different ways: Meta's native payments where they are available and you are eligible, a payment link from your processor, or a bank transfer. Among the Mexican businesses we serve with Eva, the most common path is the SPEI transfer or the payment link; that is what we observe in our own operation, not a market statistic.

Record: every sale with its customer, source and stage in a CRM that fills from the chat. Without that last piece the channel sells but never learns: you do not know which campaign paid off or who needs follow-up.

Why the chat beats the cart in Mexico

Because trust here is built by talking: the buyer wants to ask about their size, negotiate the shipping and know there is somebody on the other side before paying. Reach helps: WhatsApp reached 91.4 percent of internet users aged 16 and over in GWI's second-quarter 2025 survey. Separately, INEGI reports instant messaging as the country's number one smartphone activity, a measure of messaging in general, not of WhatsApp in particular. Add that instant bank transfer is already a national habit and the chat ends up gathering advice and payment in one place.

The traditional cart still serves the buyer who knows exactly what they want. The chat captures a very common use case: the person who needs to ask something, size, availability, shipping or payment method, before deciding.

The bottleneck and how it opens

The limit of conversational commerce was always the same: every sale demands a human conversation, and conversations do not scale with the same team. The campaign lands, the inboxes fill, and answer quality collapses exactly when the most sales were at stake.

That is what AI agents changed: the sales conversation, understanding, quoting, booking, charging and recording, can be handled by software at any hour and in parallel. With the precision that belongs here: each of those actions reaches exactly as far as its connections. It quotes if it has a catalog, books if it has a calendar, charges if a payment method is connected and records if there is a CRM. The channel keeps its personal touch and loses its ceiling, to the extent that you connect it.
