What is Click to WhatsApp?
Click to WhatsApp is Meta's ad format whose button opens a WhatsApp conversation with your business directly, instead of leading to a website or a form. The person goes from the ad on Facebook or Instagram to a chat with you in one tap, with a suggested opening message.
A form collects data and promises somebody will reach out later; a chat starts the sale right there. That is the format's bet: in countries where WhatsApp is the natural channel, remove every step between interest and conversation.
On the format's growth there is one public figure and it deserves citing as it is: Meta reported that its global click-to-WhatsApp ad revenue grew more than 60 percent year over year in the third quarter of 2025. That is Meta's global revenue, not adoption in Mexico, and we know of no equivalent public Mexican figure. What we do see among the businesses we serve is that it became a habitual way to turn ad spend into conversations. And what almost nobody tells you is that the ad is the easy half; the other half is what happens when the message arrives.
How the format works
You create it in Meta's ads manager with WhatsApp as the destination. The objective is no longer simply called messages: today the click-to-message setup sits inside broader objectives such as interaction, potential customers or sales, and what the campaign optimizes for, conversations started or purchases, depends on how you build it. The ad looks like any other on Facebook or Instagram, but its button says send message and opens your WhatsApp with a suggested opening text you define.
To really measure it you need two things: a distinct opening message per campaign, so you know where each conversation came from, and a record of what happened to each one, how many quoted, how many bought. Without that you will only know what each chat cost, not what it earned.
The mistake that ruins the spend
The ad runs around the clock, but the business answers during office hours. The person who tapped the button at nine at night wrote in the moment, and their interest cools with every unanswered hour: by the time someone replies the next day, they bought elsewhere or moved on.
Paying to start conversations nobody answers is the most expensive way to burn budget on Meta. Before raising the spend, fix the response: every ad dollar returns whatever your first reply returns.
The natural pair: CTWA plus an AI agent
An AI agent answers every ad conversation instantly, whenever it arrives: it asks what the person is looking for, quotes from your catalog and books or takes the order. The ads produce conversations; the agent converts them, and each one is recorded with its source campaign.
That turns the report from cost per conversation into cost per sale, which is the number that decides whether the campaign scales or stops.
