What is multi-agent WhatsApp?
Multi-agent WhatsApp means answering a single WhatsApp number with several people at the same time, with conversations assigned and recorded. The WhatsApp Business app already lets a team answer from linked devices; the routing by owner, the history and the permissions come from an inbox connected to the WhatsApp Business Platform.
The problem starts the same way everywhere: the business WhatsApp lives on one phone, one person carries the phone, and when that person eats, rests or quits, customers wait. Sharing the device or passing the WhatsApp Web session around is the usual patch, and it does not hold.
Multi-agent is the structural fix: the number stops depending on a device and moves to an inbox where your whole team, human or AI, answers at once without stepping on each other.
Multi-device is not multi-agent
Start with what the app does include, because most of the market gets this wrong: WhatsApp Business lets you link the same account on up to four devices, and Meta explicitly documents several team members viewing and responding through them. In the markets where it is available, the Meta Verified subscription advertises linking up to ten devices and agents. So a small team really can answer the same number without leaving the app.
What linked devices do not bring is the organizing part: they do not route conversations to an owner, do not show who answered what, carry no per-user permissions or internal notes, and take the customer's history to no system. Everyone sees everything mixed together, which is tolerable with two people and expensive with six.
Multi-agent is a different architecture: the number connects to the WhatsApp Business Platform and an inbox distributes conversations, records who answered and keeps a per-customer history. Mind the fine print: the inbox software does that, not the API. How many seats fit, how chats are assigned and whether there is a lock so two people do not answer at once are decisions of the provider and its plan, not promises from Meta.
What you need to get it
A number, a Meta business portfolio and the inbox you choose on top of the Platform; with your own engineers you can also integrate directly with the Cloud API. Verifying your company with Meta is not an absolute gate to start: it matters for scaling, because your messaging limits and the eligibility of certain applications depend on it.
And one myth worth burying: moving to the Platform no longer necessarily means switching off the phone app. Coexistence lets an eligible number operate through the Cloud API and keep being used in the WhatsApp Business app, under the conditions and feature limits Meta defines. If your case is not eligible, then the number does migrate and service moves entirely to the inbox.
The AI agent as the team's first agent
The modern version of multi-agent puts an AI agent on the front line: it answers every conversation instantly, resolves the repetitive ones end to end and hands your team only the ones that need human judgment, context already attached. How far it can resolve depends on what it is connected to: catalog, calendar, stock or CRM.
That way multi-agent stops meaning more people glued to the chat and starts meaning fewer: people step in where they add value and the rest is handled on its own, at any hour.
